Nan M. Sussman
Requests the pleasure of your company at the Launch for
Return Migration and Identity
A Global Phenomenon, A Hong Kong Case
by Nan M. Sussman
8:00 p.m., Wednesday 15 December 2010
Library, Jewish Community Centre
70 Robinson Road, Mid Levels
R.S.V.P. JCC Tel: 28015440 or E-mail: jccreception@biznetvigator.com
In the past 20 years, Hong Kong has experienced an unprecedented
migration and return migration. Dr. Nan Sussman, City University
of New York, examines the experiences of returned migrants and
their successful adaptations in her new book Return Migration and
Identity: A Global Phenomenon, A Hong Kong Case. She returns to
Hong Kong to launch its publication. She will share some of the
startling findings and several remigrants will discuss their flexible
cultural identities.
“Sussman effectively weaves together themes about migration and
remigration from such diverse sources as arts and literature, history,
sociology, and her own discipline of psychology. This book will
make an excellent contribution to research on acculturation, crosscultural
transition and adaptation, identity and migration.” – Colleen
Ward, Victoria University of Wellington

New Library Acquisition Highlights
The Jewish Community Centre’s Judaica Library is constantly adding new books to its collection to reflect the world trends and to introduce the latest publications to our readers. JCC members can sign any of them out for up to two weeks. I’ll be in the Library should you need any help or advice.
Below are some highlights of the new acquisitions:
The book of New Israeli food: A Culinary Journey by Janna Gur
Gur charts the evolution of Israeli cooking — naturally influenced by local foods and Arab cuisine — and illustrates techniques common in modern Israeli cooking. Part cookbook, part history, this coffee-table book is enriched by gorgeous and vibrantly coloured photographs. It also includes engaging stories on basics in Israeli culinary life — breakfast, olive oil, bread, cheese and more — and a short chapter describing some of the more prevalent special ingredients and spices.
One Baby Step at a Time: Seven Secrets of Jewish Motherhood by Chana (Jenny) Weisberg
Weisberg describes the seven ancient Jewish secrets that have enabled Jewish women throughout the millennia to infuse their mothering lives with more happiness, fulfillment, and spirituality. The book will uplift, validate, and provide practical suggestions to improve the life of every Jewish mother.
Remembering the Holocaust: A Debate by Jeffrey C. Alexander
Remembering the Holocaust explains why the Holocaust has come to be considered the central event of the twentieth century, and what this means. Presenting Alexander’s controversial essay and following up with challenging and equally provocative responses to it, this book offers a sweeping historical reconstruction of the Jewish mass murder as it evolved in the popular imagination of Western peoples, as well as an examination of its consequences.
Jewish Holidays Cookbook by Jill Colella Bloomfield
For grade 4-8. The traditions and recipes of Judaism are celebrated in this beautiful modern cookbook geared toward kids and their families. Eleven Jewish holidays are discussed and accompanied by recipes for the ancient and modern foods traditionally served. Kids can lead the charge on braiding their first challah or making their own kugel, while spending time learning about Jewish history and heritage.
Why is this Night Different from all Other Nights? The Four Questions Around the World by Ilana Kurshan
This short but informative and beautifully illustrated book translates the Passover seder’s Four Questions into twenty-three languages and provides capsule histories of the Jews in the countries where the languages are spoken. It is also accompanied by a brief overview of Jewish life and culture among the speakers of the language.
Read what Amazon’s readers have to say…
As always, a collection of light reading has also been acquired by the Library. Come and check out the fiction by famous authors like Faye Kellerman and A.B. Yehoshua.
